Sailmakers palm and other equiment

Sheila Newsome's grandfather, James Hodgson Clark was a merchant seaman from Whitby and these tools were used by James on his many voyages around the world during his time as a seaman.

The equipment includes a sailmakers palm, which is an oversized thimble used to drive the needle through the heavy canvas used for sails, a needle and a telescope.

James served between 1905 and 1915 on Whitby based ships including Ingleside and Kildale. A note in his logbook from the Master of the Kildale says, "This is the certify that the bearer Mr J Clark has served under my command as Able Seaman" He goes on to say "I have pleasure in recommending him to anyone requiring the services of an efficient seaman". This was after a voyage from Cardiff to the River Plate in South America.
