This 'lock knife' was found at Pompeii over forty years ago by a guide at the site. The owner of the knife, Mr Broadley, believes it is Roman and may have been lost or hidden during the eruption of Vesuvius in AD79. Folding knives were popular amongst the Romans and have been in use ever since.
