This sculpture of a spitfire was made by an Italian prisoner of war, Ricordo Cassaro Giovanno, whilst he was interred at Storwood P.O.W camp near Melbourne, York. Ricordo gave it to William Davis, who was 10 years old at the time. He was working on a local farm and he became a good friend of the family and stayed in touch with the family for many years.
The metal the sculpture is made from was salvaged from a Wellington bomber which crashed at Kneeshaw's Farm at Sutton on Derwent, near Hags Bridge. The plane went through the farmhouse roof, no-one from the family was injured, but it isn't known what happened to the bomber crew.

Beautiful. It'd be insanely difficult to build. What drew me to this photo is that I heard the pullout on Radio 4 this morning -- I'm another William Davis, but a California guy, half a planet away, and my daily driver is my '68 Triumph Spitfire. btw, your program rocks.
