As a WAAF during the war I made a number of train journeys to visit relatives. Once I visited my brother in Cottingham near Beverley. The train was full, the corridors seething with troops and families packed into the carriages. My brother picked me up and lifted me in through an open window to get me onto the train! Children were passed down the carriages from soldier to soldier to get them to the toilet at the end of the carriages. I was stationed by the toilet and, as the only woman in the corridor, had to take charge of getting them in and out of the toilet for the whole journey from Humberside to Peterborough. Another time I spent the entire the entire journey in the mesh luggage rack - actually very comfortable!
