My Uncle, Alfred Raymond Poole, never really spoke of the Second World War, but on his death I found photographs of an aeroplane, codname Y for Yorker. Raymond had come down in the desert and escaped via the Astrodome, in 1941. Cut and bruised the crew discussed their options, deciding to commit suicide if the Desert Rats had not found them in five days. Due to the bravery of the Desert Rats and unknown others in the rescue chain, Raymond returned to Great Britain, becoming a member of the caterpillar club. Raymond then continued to fly mainly in Lancaster bombers, as a midturret gunner or tail end Charley.

In tribute to my uncles bravery I would lie his part in WW2 recorded.
