This story has been submitted to the People's War website by Andrew Livesey of the Lancshomeguard on behalf of Norma Davies and added to the site with her permission.

I was 12 years old and spent six months sleeping each night in the air raid shelter.
Dad worked on the Gladstone Dock, which was frequently alight because of the Germans, dropping incendiaries, they used to light up the Docklands to allow the German bombers to see the target.
Dad had to put fires out on the Docks before coming home. We were worried for him and just hoped he would come home safe and well.
I can remember a 鈥渟ugar鈥 ship that was blown up at the Dock, the flames were blue, we saw it even in the daytime.
