I worked at Stableford Wood sawmills cutting timber and making charcoal during the war, and all my working life. It was interesting work. We had some Italin POW's who worked there too. They were based in Worksop and got bused in every day. They worked on the land and burnt the tops and rubbish from the saw mill but they weren't very good workers, mostly.

The wood was bombed one night at about 2 o'clock in the morning. You could hear the bombs come whistling down. They dropped some near to the house. I think one was a land mine. They were aiming for Swinderby aerodrome and they dropped some the other side too at Norton Wood. First of all they'd drop flares. They were so bright you could read a newspaper by the light they gave off. I thought they were our boys when I first heard the noise but I soon found out they weren't!
