I was a 14 year old schoolboy at Horsley C of E School when war broke out in 1939. Two weeks later I had left school and had joined a local valve maker called Newman Hender and Co.

We made a considerable amount of items for the war effort, including a large amount of castings for the Vauxhall Bedford Army lorries and a small circular tray used in the manufacture of parachutes.

The atmosphere in the factory was one of comradeship as nearly everyone had family members who were in the forces, so we supported each other and we felt that we were doing our bit.
