This story was submitted to the People's war site by Helen Oram, Scotland csv on behalf of Margaret Ewan. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

I was five years old in 1945. On VJ Day my older sister Isobel and myself were discharged from the "Sick Kids" Hospital in Aberdeen, where we had both had our tonsils out. With our sore throats, we couldn't talk.

Flags were flying in the streets and people were preparing bonfires. When the bonfires were lit and the singing started in the streets, we had our noses pressed to the window-panes to watch everything that was happening.

We thought that all the flags and the celebrations were for us!
