It was V.E. night and I was 19 years old. There were a lot of very young airmen in Blackpool. We lit a large bonfire on the south shore sands. I think the wood came from the pier. Donald Pearce was there and he was singing round the bonfire all night. I especially remember 鈥 By a Babbling Brook鈥 but he sang all the popular songs of the day.
When that was finished everyone made a crocodile line and did the Hokey Cokey to the north pier. Some of the airmen had piano accordions and concertinas and played for us. By the way I did behave myself that night!
