During the war to save coupons, we bought blankets from Derby Market and a local dressmaker Mrs Attewell, in our village (Holbrook), turned them into coats for us. They were winter coats with belts, and I had a faun check one and an airforce blue one.

We also used to turn flour bags into tea towels and also pillowcases. We used to keep boiling them until they came white.

When coal was low we used to go into Booths Wood and collect peices of wood from the treecutters who worked there for firewood.

We also used to exchange goods with other people when we had a little bit more left over.
