I was about 17 when war broke out and I went to work at Park Brothers where I inspected components for batteries - it was very very boring. I lived in Blackburn with my parents and sisters. I remember the night the bomb dropped on Ainsworth Street - I think it was the night that Darwen was bombed.

We used to go to Tony's - the dance venue in Blackburn and also to Blackpool. We'd dance with the Americans there - they were all very nice.

I was already engaged and my boyfriend was in Palestine. There was a calendar on the wall at work and I'd cross off the days till he came home. He came home in 1947.

On VE day I went to King George's Hall In Blackburn.
