It was Christmas 1940 and we lived in Manchester near the Exide Battery factory. The batteries were used in Lorries, Tanks, Ships and Submarines etc. The Germans dropped bombs on the factory but missed, instead they landed in a field next to our house and the surrouding area. My father, being an ARP warden, went to investigate the damage caused to any buildings etc, on doing so he fell into a crater a bomb had left, he was realy annoyed and rather embarrassed.
ON returning home he was horrified to find that a stray bomb had taken out at least three windows in his greenhouse and distroyed half of his prize tomato crop. He never forgave Hitler for that, now it was getting personal.
