Outlook Mixtape: Stitches, seams and movie scenes

A Marilyn Monroe-inspired charity swim, the Nepalese fashion superstar Prabal Gurung, a life-saving Kenyan uniform, and Ruth Carter the first Black Oscar-winning costume designer.

A patchwork of stories on the power of a good outfit.

Sarah Tinney started one of Australia's biggest open-water swims as a way of dealing with grief. All of the swimmers dress up as Marilyn Monroe, her late mother's favourite film star.

Inspired by watching The Oprah Winfrey Show, Nepalese designer Prabal Gurung decided to try and make it in America. After launching his own label at New York Fashion Week in 2009, it all took off.

Wilson Maina grew up in Kenya listening to his grandfather鈥檚 many tall tales, and didn鈥檛 always believe them. So he was surprised that his grandfather鈥檚 story about a uniform that saved his life at the time of the Mau Mau rebellion, turned out to be true.

Ruth Carter made history when she became the first Black costume designer to win an Oscar for her work on Black Panther. Ruth has been working in film for over 35 years, but her fascination with clothes began as a young woman when she would modify her mother鈥檚 old clothes to make unique pieces.
