In a laboratory in Morocco, machines whir, lamps hum, and scientists examine phials of seeds grown across the hot, dry lands from Palestine to Iran - the historical Fertile Crescent. This is the main international seed bank for the region, a living library of thousands of indigenous varieties. Some have been cultivated for millennia, while in the growing fields outside, specialists experiment with new kinds of grains and pulses to withstand war, drought and import-dependency. The work of the seed bank, run by the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas, has never been more important. This lively programme is recorded on site in Morocco and includes visits to female farming co-operatives in the Middle Atlas Mountains, where women are having their say for the first time into creating the seeds of the future.
