Why is my Virgin Media recording greyed out?

If the ��˿�� removes a channel, the recordings from this channel are made available for 12 months. If the channel removal is the decision of the supplier (e.g. Virgin Media) then the recording will be available for 3 months. Once the recording is greyed out, you will no longer be able to view this recording.

Why do I see duplicate channels in my Freeview Play EPG?

On 7 June 2023 we were able to put ��˿�� One HD and ��˿�� Two HD in prime slots 1 and 2 for newer Freeview Play televisions when connected to the internet (we refer to these below as ‘qualifying TVs’).

Previously, ��˿�� One HD and ��˿�� Two HD were listed at slots 101 and 102 and, for most devices, that existing listing will continue to be duplicated (��˿�� One HD would be at slot 1 and 101, etc.)

For qualifying TVs, the standard definition versions of ��˿�� One and ��˿�� Two will be listed in 611 and 612 respectively.

Below is a list of television brands (and release years) for qualifying TVs which can process the swapping when the TV is connected to the internet.

To check if your TV is qualifying, please go to channel 100 (the ‘Freeview Explore’ service) on your Freeview Play device and select “Get Help" from the "Help and Settings" section. In the bottom right hand corner of the screen, you will see a collection of numbers and letters which are the ‘Freeview Play platform ID’ – if that ID appears in the list above, then your TV should be able to process the swapping when connected to the internet.

It is worth noting that If you disconnect your TV from the internet, the enhanced channel listing will be lost and the listing will revert to ��˿�� One and ��˿�� Two in SD at the top of the EPG.

Is the RadioTeleswitching System (RTS) being turned off?

The ��˿�� do not own the Radio Teleswitching System (RTS), we simply deliver the signal using our transmitter on behalf of the Energy Networks Association (ENA). The ��˿�� has a long-standing relationship with the ENA to transmit Radio Tele-switching data on 198kHz alongside the ��˿�� Radio 4 Longwave signal.

Energy regulator Ofgem has set binding annual installation targets for electricity suppliers to roll out smart and advanced meters to their remaining non-smart customers. Radio Teleswitch is being replaced as part of the smart meter rollout programme and to enable the programme to continue, the life of the Radio Teleswitching system has been extended through to June 2025.

What is Radio Teleswitching (RTS)?

Energy suppliers use the Radio Teleswitching System to switch electricity meters between different tariff rates at different times of the day. For example, this could be to send start and stop times to Economy 7, Economy 10, and storage heaters.

Why are my subtitles blocking programme information and names?

In pre-recorded programmes where there are names or extra programme information that appear at the bottom of the screen, subtitles are placed in the lower third of the screen to avoid obscuring this.

With programmes with live content, such as News or Panorama, it is not known in advance if extra information will be displayed. With this in mind, subtitles are placed similarly as a precaution.

For sport, the subtitles are normally placed in the top left half of the screen in order to avoid blocking any sporting action. On some televisions this can block the score graphic. The ��˿�� has no control over this.

For those pre-recorded programmes where the subtitles are pre-prepared and pre-delivered, the default position is to place the subtitles at the bottom of the screen. We wouldn’t normally place subtitles in the middle of the screen for this type of content, unless there was a good reason to do so, i.e. a documentary may have someone talking with a name underneath, in which case we’d time the subtitles to briefly move up to avoid the name appearing and place subsequent subtitles at the bottom of the screen once the name disappeared. Or, as an example, if some significant plot action was happening in the lower part of the screen, we would endeavour to ensure this was not obscured by subtitles.

The ��˿�� have very clear guidelines on where to position subtitles; we are very aware of the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing subtitle users and the importance of not covering up a speaker’s mouth or facial expressions.

What percentage of programmes are subtitled?

Our policy is to provide subtitles on 100% of programmes on our regulated channels – these subtitles will also be available on iPlayer. However, we don’t have any control over what happens in the set top box. Some boxes don’t retain the subtitles on recordings, also older Virgin Media boxes will not show subtitles on the iPlayer app due to limitations in the technology used.

Virgin has a limited method of instructing the box when to start and end recordings, particularly with live or news programmes that could potentially overrun. A useful tip is to add 5 minutes to the start and/or end of your recordings. To do this, follow these instructions:

How do I set an alarm on Alexa to wake up to my favourite station?

Amazon have introduced a feature which makes it possible to set up an Alexa Routine to make Alexa perform a requested action at a specific time. For example, this is a great way to wake up at 07:00 to ��˿�� Radio 4. Here’s how to do just that (just change the time and station to suit you):

Navigate to Routines in the Alexa app
Tap + in the top-right corner
Tap Enter Routine name and add a name for the routine e.g. "Radio 4 alarm"
Tap When this happens, then select Schedule and set the time to 07:00
Choose the frequency, i.e. daily, weekdays etc.
Tap Add action and select Customised
Enter "Play ��˿�� Radio 4"
Tap Next, then Save
Finally, confirm the device you want this to happen on

As you can set up multiple routines, be creative and wake up to a different station each day!

While this should work, we recommend you use a dedicated alarm for when you really have to get up (for a flight, etc.). External problems, like an internet issue or power outage, could cause a routine
