eMusic to offer audio books

More good news on the ebook front. has that they are to make audio books available for download.
eMusic is a major seller of digital music, offering more than 1 million tunes for download in MP3 format. It is a fairly logical step, then, to move into providing audio books.
eMusic works on a subscription model. Various packages will be available, and whilst UK prices are not known yet, it is anticipated that the entry-level option will be US $9.99 for one audio book download per month 鈥 or roughly a fiver.
eMusic is also a fairly accessible website. When the and software that you need to install, they described it as 鈥渆asy to use once you learn where information is located.鈥
It is also pretty handy that the books will be available in MP3 format. So audio books can be played on your MP3 player and computer, or burned to CD.
There are other companies already providing audio books, notably Audible. But if nothing else, it is always good to have a choice, and a bit of competition will hopefully mean that downloading becomes cheaper, as well as providing a wide range of titles to choose from.
That of course remains the big issue 鈥 choice. Audible offers 35,000 titles to download. That sounds like an impressive statistic, but in 2006, alone produced more than four times that number of new titles.
Getting more books into alternative accessible formats still remains the biggest issue. But if companies are seeing commercial opportunities here, then that surely has to lead to a greater range of books becoming available.
