During the 19th Century, many people in the villages around Sheffield worked in metal-related trades based in their own homes. A major occupation practised in the village of Grenoside, some five miles from the city centre, was file-cutting.
Walter Ellison, a member of the Grenoside & District Local History Group, whose father was one of the last cutters, recalls helping during evenings and school holidays in the late 1920s. More...
