In the late 60s and 70s, Sly Stone revolutionised pop music culture by fusing soul, psychedelia, funk and rock in such a thrilling and compelling way that he influenced everyone from Prince to Primal Scream, Miles Davis to the Beastie Boys. His songs have been widely sampled throughout the history of hip-hop and he remains a touchstone for originality, intelligence and optimism. His innovations were not solely musical either – they were social and political too. The band he put together, Sly and the Family Stone, were mixed race and mixed gender which was relatively unheard of in the late 60s and was hugely symbolic. In 2007, Sly performed a short set at the Montreux Jazz Festival and, courtesy of our colleagues at the EBU, Stephen will share an excerpt of it on the show this week alongside the usual sparkling array of alternative music including Four Tet, Little Simz, De La Soul and loads more.
