48-year-old French swimmer, Ben Lecomte, who swam the Atlantic in 1998, will now swim 5,500 miles across the Pacific, to highlight rising pollution in the sea.

He will swim through miles of micro-plastic, known as 'the great garbage patch' which he said is "twice the size of France" in order to visually "bring people to the middle of the ocean" via social media.

Mr Lecomte said his experience of riding a motorcycle in Paris and Dallas is "far more dangerous" than swimming across the Pacific Ocean.

He expects the swim to take 5-6 months, and hopes to arrive in San Francisco in time for the UN climate conference at the end of the year.
