Suggs has said Madness has always been a mixture of 'happiness and sadness'.

The Madness vocalist, whose real name is Graham McPherson told 5 live's Sarah Brett and Nihal Arthanayake that the band had got to a position when 'people just wanted us to be funny all the time'.

Having a break from the band, he said they suddenly realised that Madness has always been a 'bit of both', a mixture of 'happiness and sadness'. He added:

"We are not just a gang of fools, we might be stupid but we're not foolish".
