Farron: I decided to quit as Lib Dem leader two weeks into election
Outgoing Lib Dem leader Tim Farron has revealed that he made the decision to stand down as Liberal Democrat leader two weeks into the general election campaign, but did not announce his decision publicly.
Speaking to Emma Barnett on 5 live Daily, in his first full interview since announcing his decision to quit, Mr Farron said he had made the decision because he didn鈥檛 want to 鈥渂ecome the story鈥, after he faced intense questioning over his Christian faith.
When asked by Emma Barnett whether he had deceived people who voted Lib Dem in the election, he said:
"They're giving the party the vote, and the Lib Dems, thanks to what we've done in the last two years, will continue... My sense was that I was leading the party through an election to get the best result possible for us."
