‘Round Midnight is presented by award-winning saxophonist Soweto Kinch. This weekday late-night show celebrates the thriving UK jazz scene and spotlights the best new music alongside incredible acts from past decades. Soweto is joined this week by formidable award-winning British pianist, bandleader, and educator Nikki Iles. A key part of the British jazz community, Nikki has forged her path as an in-demand musician, prolific composer, working with contemporaries including Anthony Braxton, Vince Mendoza, Art Farmer, Steve Swallow and Kenny Wheeler to name a few. She is also a highly-regarded musician internationally, collaborating with artists and directing bands in mainland Europe and the US. Recently, Nikki has worked with Hamberg’s celebrated NDR Big Band, and she now begins her new role as their Principal Conductor. For her first 4/4 selection this week, Nikki chooses a record by a fellow pianist who is one of jazz and music’s innovators. Also in the programme, releases from Youness, Ineza, and 4hero.
