‘Round Midnight is presented by award-winning saxophonist Soweto Kinch. This weekday late-night show celebrates the thriving UK jazz scene and spotlights the best new music alongside incredible acts from past decades. Tonight Soweto pays tribute the late great Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal, who very sadly died on 13 September at the age of 89. Known widely as “The Sorcerer”, Hermeto conjured musical worlds that drew influence from many different music traditions, and embraced the world as a musical instrument – from household objects to nature itself. As well as leading several groups, Hermeto worked closely and collaborated with artists including Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, Heraldo do Monte, and Miles Davis, and was a dedicated supporter of artists at the earlier stages of their musical journeys. Soweto will be sharing concert highlights from a performance featuring Hermeto Pascoal and his Grupo, recorded live at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival in 2019. Brazilian legend Joyce Moreno, flautist (and Hermeto's Goddaughter) Mariana Zwarg, and Leeds bandleader Fergus Quill who spent time working with Hermeto will also be sharing their reflections and memories of him.
