Athena was born and brought up in the USA, an only child for her parents. She has athetoid cerebral palsy, and her mother Jan gave up her job in order to fight for Athena to attend regular school. Athena was actually born Rebecca, but her high school classics teacher said she should be called Athena, the Goddess of War as her life was a constant battle. The name stuck. Athena came to the UK ten years ago, going on to study at RADA and is now an actress and film-maker. She also advises Transport for London on matters of accessibility. This conversation was recorded when her mother Jan was over from the States, and led to a discussion of how we鈥檒l all face disability if we live long enough.
