Cowley Barracks, Oxford: The Liebermann Brothers

World War One At ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ

Available for over a year

Five brothers, who were all musicians and worked as postmen, served as stretcher-bearers in the most horrific circumstances imaginable. The Liebermann brothers’ story is told by historian Stephen Barker, and it starts with their great-grandfather Cornelius, who was born in Hessen, Germany. It’s a story that passes through the Victorian workhouse, through the Cowley Barracks, to Italy at the end of the war. Location: Cowley Barracks (now demolished), Junction of Barracks Lane and Horsepath Road, Hollow Way, Oxford OX4 Image: The Liebermann Brothers, courtesy of Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum, Woodstock, Oxfordshire
