England and Nottinghamshire batsman James Taylor was forced to retire because of a serious heart condition. The 26-year-old played seven Tests for his country and 27 one-day internationals. Like Taylor, former England fast-bowler David 'Syd' Lawrence had his career cut short in 1992 when he fractured his left knee cap whilst bowling in a Test match against New Zealand. After his own cruel twist of fate, Lawrence admitted to Stumped's Alison Mitchell that he has battled depression and that the most difficult part to deal with was accepting how quickly it all happened.
