The bells at York Minster have fallen silent after 30 volunteer ringers were sacked. York Minster said their “agreements were terminated” in order to replace them with a “fully trained professional team” led by a new head bell-ringer. John Ridgeway-Wood, who plays the smaller carillon bells, was suspended after speaking out about the controversy on social media. He told 5 live the situation is “completely bizarre and unique” and that the bell-ringers were sacked due to issues around “health and safety”. “There are people at the Minster who have been ringing these bells for 30 years – they know the dangers,” he said.
