NFL star declines Hall of Fame over brain injury

Up All Night

Available for over a year

Becoming a 'Hall of Famer' is the ultimate accolade for American Footballers. But ex-New York Giant Corey Widmer has declined his nomination to Montana Hall of Fame, saying the sport "destroyed my life". The 49 year old says he suffers from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease, he believes is caused by the numerous concussions he had throughout his footballing career and wants to raise awareness of the issue. Corey told Up All Night's Rhod Sharp: "I've really pushed away all my friends and family. I really don't put myself out in society because these injuries effect us differently. People have violent behaviour, they might have attention deficit type behaviour, mood swings that you don't know what's going to happen, gambling, drug abuse, the list is almost endless when you think about human emotions and how concussion can affect a person individually."
