Son Andrew is having to accept that Carolyn is sleeping more and interacting less as her dementia worsens. During the day he has two conversations with people he meets about their own families and dementia. The first is a plumber who calls to give the gas boiler its annual service. He talks about his late grandfather living again through the events of the Angola Civil War decades earlier. The second is a woman he chats to regularly at the supermarket round the corner. She talks about the way her mother-in-law, who never previously used bad language, swears horribly at her son. Andrew's relieved that, while it's upsetting to see Mum 'disappear' in front of him, she's never behaved in a distressing way.
