China has become the first country to approve an inhaled Covid vaccine. Made by CanSino, this vaccine can be inhaled as a fine mist and uses a harmless adenovirus to teach the body how to fight the virus. Akiko Iwasaki, professor of Immunobiology at Yale University, is working on a similar vaccine that could be taken through the nose. She gives us her insight into how the newly approved Chinese vaccine works and the medical advantages that could come about as a result. She says it "can establish immune responses right where the virus first lands on our body... and if you can establish immuno-responses there you can prevent the virus from replicating... having immune responses established in the nose and mouth would also prevent infection and transmission."
