Millions of 'mermaid's tears' washing up on French beaches

Newshour

Available for over a year

An estimated 160,000 tonnes of microplastics - tiny pellets known as mermaid's tears - end up in our oceans every year, contaminating marine life and polluting our beaches. We hear from Lionel Cheylus from Surfrider Foundation Europe who recently organised an attempted clean-up of one of the worst affected beaches: Pornic, on the French Atlantic coast. "We are very concerned about biodiversity, because all the fish that are in the sea can eat them, and then after that you eat the fish... we have to stop this kind of pollution at the source... we have to change our behaviour and consume less plastic."
