Why Australia Day isn't celebrated by many Aboriginal Australians

Newshour

Available for over a year

Australia's national day is a day of national pride and celebration - with fireworks, beach parties and concerts in towns and cities across the country. It marks the anniversary of the arrival of the first British settlers in the 18th century But many Aboriginal Australians see it as a symbol of colonisation and in recent years, it has become the focal point for anger about the mistreatment of indigenous communities. Dr Hannah McGlade is a Minang woman of the Bibulman nation - and an associate professor at Curtin University's law school. She told Newshour's James Coomarasamy that it isn't something that should be celebrated.
