Manchester City, the English Premier League football team owned, since 2008, by a private equity group controlled by Abu Dhabi Royal Family, has been charged by the Premier League with more than one hundred breaches of the league's financial rules following a four-year investigation. The Premier League has referred the club to an independent commission over alleged rule breaches between 2009 and 2018. It also accused City of not co-operating since the investigation began in December 2018. In response, City said they were "surprised" by the charges and are supported by a "body of irrefutable evidence". The commission can impose punishments ranging from a fine and points deduction to expulsion from the Premier League. Kieran Maguire is a lecturer in football finance at the University of Liverpool.
