Daphne & Celeste: 'Getting bottled at a festival was better than playing a supermarket'

Reading Festival has a reputation as one of the UK's biggest rock festivals - so it was surprising when American pop stars Daphne & Celeste were booked to play its main stage in the year 2000. Rock fans waiting to see the likes of Blink-182, Rage Against the Machine and Slipknot gave them an infamously hostile reception, hurling objects including food, bottles and even a wheelchair at the stage throughout the show. Despite this, the duo made it through to the end of their set, and have come to regard it as a positive experience: "If you just give up, that's when you have to feel bad... The fact that we survived is a win to me." They also explain why that wasn't the toughest crowd they played to during their time in the UK: "A supermarket tour is something that keeps you humble... we were basically in the frozen food section, performing for just grocery shoppers." "It was really hard to perform when people just wanted to do their shopping."
