Economic abuse: victims have new way to stop malicious payment references

Wake Up to Money

Available for over a year

References on bank payments - the messages you can attach when you send cash to an account - are, for most people, a straightforward way to let your friend know you've paid your share of a meal, or highlight a bill payment to your flatmate. But there are reports some people are misusing this feature to abuse people - particularly in cases where someone has cut contact and ended an abusive relationship. Now Starling Bank has announced that customers will be able to hide payment references on their accounts, directly from their banking app. Sean Farrington talks to 'Rebecca' (not her real name), an economic abuse survivor and Nicola Sharp-Jeffs, the founder and chief executive of the charity Surviving Economic Abuse.
