  | The water flowing down the hills around Hardcastle Crags (also known as Little Switzerland) above Hebden Bridge had a tremendous impact on the area, bringing this part of West Yorkshire to the forefront of the Industrial Revolution as work moved to the mills. In this episode of Open Country Richard Uridge takes a look at how this same water is one of the forces enabling the area to pioneer green energy and self sufficiency.

 Contributors:

Guy Laurie and Mark Draper from - a 19th century cotton mill which is now being run as a model of sustainable development.

Ann Kilbey, Secretary of the . Up at the village of Heptonstall, Ann tells Richard about the development of industry in the area - from a family business based at home to the many cotton and wool mills that sprang up around the local rivers.

Polly Webber, Gail Hirsch and Justine Wyatt from the . In a redundant mill in Hebden Bridge, the Centre aims to make sustainability achievable and 'simply irresistible'!

Jane Williams, a co-ordinator with . This partnership aims to improve the river Calder, its tributaries and its bankside, and to reconnect people with the water - from planning at the top, to volunteer groups clearing the dreaded Himalayan Balsam.
